ACTIVISATION

Like most puppies Nemi needs more activisation than exersize. This is achieved in several ways.

We train a little agility, and work on some tricks just for fun. We play hide and go seek in the woods, hiding both ourselves, and sometimes her toys. On rainy days, Nemi loves to find treats we've hidden around a room. We also have a chest full of toys, both squeeky toys and activisation toys.

On of these activisations toys is a hollow treat ball. The treats go in the ball through a hole, the size of the hole is regulated to an appropriate size for the treat allowing treats to fall out when the ball is rolled. This is a smash hit with Mita. Nemi is taking some time catching on to this one.

Nemi watches me place treats in the ball. I place the ball on the floor then I push it gently. It rolls and a treat or two falls out. Nemi watches with interest.

Then it's Nemi's turn to figure out how to get the treats out.
She looks long and hard at the ball.
Carefully she starts sniffing around it, touching it very gently, but never so much that the ball actually moves. She sits down, looking at it, pondering.

Nemi is trained purely by positive reinforcement (using the clicker as a secondary reinforcer) - no negative reinforcement. She knows that some behaviours will give her praise and treats - others behaviours give her nothing (we simply ignore them). The latter are not worth doing - better off doing the ones that result in something good. It is an amazingly effective way of dog training, and results in a dog that is very observant and solution oriented.

So, if Nemi wants to achieve something (a treat, a game of tug and war, or perhaps some playtime with one of the special toys in the toy chest) she starts offering me (or a family member, or a visitor) behaviours. She does this hoping that one of them will result in a click, confident in her knowledge that she will not be punished for making mistakes.

After looking at the ball for a while, she stood up and bowed to it.
She looked intently at the ball. Hm, no reward.
She tried sitting again. Her eyes still focused on the ball.
Nothing.
How about getting up the hind legs?
Nope.
Perhaps a jump with a twist (the latest trick we are working on).
That didn't work either!
Another bow, from the other side of the ball.
Hrmpf!
Stupid ball!
She looked at me and walked away from it, head and tail held high.
Apparently no point in the stupid round thing. It didn't bother to click or spit out any treats no matter what behaviours she offered!
